Venus Williams Biography | Wiki
Born June 17, 1980 in Lynwood, California in Brooklyn, New York, Williams is a former World No. 1 and is ranked World No. 29 in singles (as of March 1, 2014). She has been ranked World No. 1 in singles on three separate occasions and is touted as being the first American black woman to achieve this feat during the ‘Open Era’ (the period beginning in 1968 when professionals and amateurs were permitted to compete in the same tournaments).
Williams turned professional at the age of 14 in 1994. The world held their breath during her debut in the Australian Open when she was stacked up against her younger sister, Serena, in their first professional pairing in the late 90s. Venus defeated Serena in that competition, but lost in the quarterfinals to World No. 3 Lindsay Davenport.
Venus experienced her fair share of winnings, injuries and comebacks, as the Williams sisters continued to battle each other a total of 24 times during their rivalry in women’s tennis. In 2007, Venus earned her associate degree in fashion design and subsequently started her own fashion line called EleVen. In August 2009, Venus and Serena became part-owners of the Miami Dolphins.
As of July 2017, Venus has earned $38 million on the court. That’s enough to make her the second highest earning female tennis player of all time ahead of Maria Sharapova ($36.5 million) and behind sister Serena Williams ($85 million). Off the court, Venus typically makes between $5 and $10 million per year from endorsements.
