Shonda Rhimes was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 13, 1970. She is probably most famous for being the creator, executive producer and head writer of the shows “Scandal”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice”. Grey’s Anatomy debuted in March of 2005 and has gone on to air more than 279 episodes over 13 seasons. Private Practice ran from September 2007 to January 2013 and during its time aired 111 episodes over six seasons. Shonda also created and executive produces the smash hit Kerry Washington drama “Scandal” which currently airs on ABC.
She attended Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois and then Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. After graduating from Dartmouth, Shonda moved to San Francisco where she landed a job in advertising. She then chose to pivot career paths and enrolled at USC to study screenwriting. After graduating from USC with honors, Shonda wrote a handful of scripts.
One of her most successful screenplays was the Britney Spears coming-of-age drama “Crossroads” which earned a surprising $60 million at the box office. She then wrote a handful of movies for Disney before landing an overall deal with ABC to create television shows. Her first show was Grey’s Anatomy premiered in 2005 as a mid-season replacement and went on to achieve very high ratings. Her show “How to Get Away with Murder” debuted in September 2014.
