David Duchovny was born on August 7, 1960 in New York City, New York. He graduated from Princeton University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. He then received a Master of Arts, also in English Literature, from Yale University and began to work on a PhD that remains unfinished.
One of his earliest television related jobs was a role in a commercial for Lowenbrau Beer in 1987. He had soon landed a reoccurring role on the TV show “Twin Peaks” and was the host of Showtime’s “The Red Shoe Diaries”. In 1993 Duchovny landed the role that would make him a star, that of Special Agent Fox Mulder on “The X Files”.
The show quickly became one of Fox biggest hits. He stayed with the series until the 7th season in 2001, when he quit due to a contract dispute. He appeared in the first half of season 8, but did not appear in season 9 until the series finale in 2002. Duchovny has tried his hand at directing several times, including directing an episode of “X-Files” and an episode of “Bones”.
Duchovny stared as Hank Moody in the Showtime series “Californication” from 2007 to 2014, for which he won a Golden Globe Award in 2008 (he also won a Golden Globe Award in 1997 for The X Files). He has two children with actress Tea Leoni, whom he was married to from 1997 to 2014.
Duchovny starred as Sam Hodiak on the television series Aquarius from 2015 to 2016. He appeared in the re-make of the TV series Twin Peaks in 2017 and the reboot of The X-Files in 2016 and 2018. In 2016 David Duchovny received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Television at 6508 Hollywood Blvd.
