Early Life

Hansen was born on September 13, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois. Hansen grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, and attended Brother Rice High School in Michigan.

Inspired by watching the Jimmy Hoffa investigations, Hansen decided to become a journalist, graduating from the Michigan State University College of Communication Arts and Sciences in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication.

NBC Career

After reporting at various radio stations and newspapers for a decade, Hansen got his first television break in 1993 as a correspondent at NBC News for the news magazine Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric.

He did notable work for Dateline including coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing, Columbine High School shooting, and the Unabomber. But it was his segments To Catch a Predator that brought him the most fame. Camera crews from NBC followed along as sting operations were set up to capture potential sexual predators looking for underage teens (usually 13-15) on internet chatrooms.

His Post-NBC Career

Capitalizing on his true-crime fame, in 2015, Hansen would become the host of the television series Killer Instinct on Investigation Discovery, chronicling famous homicide cases. He would also anchor the news program Crime Watch Daily in 2016. His introduction in the second season gave the show a ratings boost, but the show ended its 3-year run in 2018.

Taking a break from television, Hansen dives into weekly podcasting with his show Have a Seat with Chris Hansen.

Personal Life

In June 2018, Hansen’s wife Mary Jane filed for divorce after nearly 30 years of marriage. The family has two sons and was living in New York City until his eviction.

Not a stranger to scandals, Hansen was busted by the National Enquirer for cheating on his then-wife with American beauty Krysten Caddell in June 2011. Ironically, he was captured red-handed by cameras, not unlike his famous To Catch a Predator specials.

In January 2019, Hansen was charged with larceny after bouncing a $13,000 check to a vendor for promotional goods rendered. The charges were later dropped.

On February 28, 2020, Hansen was charged with harassment by a “civilian”. He has not yet entered a plea and had a court date for March 24, 2020.
