Early Life
Hansen was born on September 13, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois. Hansen grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, and attended Brother Rice High School in Michigan.

NBC Career
After reporting at various radio stations and newspapers for a decade, Hansen got his first television break in 1993 as a correspondent at NBC News for the news magazine Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric.
He did notable work for Dateline including coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing, Columbine High School shooting, and the Unabomber. Capitalizing on his true-crime fame, in 2015, Hansen would become the host of the television series Killer Instinct on Investigation Discovery, chronicling famous homicide cases.
